Chelsea's summer spending settled on a number this year: £117 million. It is a startling number for a player who, thirty months earlier, could not get a game for Manchester City's first team and was learning his trade on loan at Blackpool. Rogers' rise from lower-half loanee to £117m Chelsea forward is one of the fastest value climbs English football has seen in years — and it says as much about the state of the transfer market as it does about the player himself.

A record that lasted a matter of weeks

Who is Morgan Rogers?
Rogers' career did not follow a straight line to the top. Born in Halesowen in July 2002, he joined West Bromwich Albion's academy at seven and made his professional debut for the club in February 2019. Manchester City signed him later that year — but he never made a first-team appearance for them. Instead, his education came on loan: Lincoln City (25 appearances, 6 goals), Bournemouth (15 appearances, 1 goal), and Blackpool (20 appearances, 1 goal), followed by half a season at Middlesbrough in 2023/24.
None of those spells suggested a £117m footballer was being assembled. The shift came in February 2024, when Aston Villa paid £8m to sign him — a fee that, eighteen months later, looks like one of the shrewdest pieces of business in the Premier League.
The Villa breakout that rewrote his valuation
Rogers' first full season at Villa Park, 2024/25, transformed his career. Fourteen goals and fifteen assists across all competitions earned him Aston Villa's Young Player of the Season award and the PFA Young Player of the Year for 2025 — recognition that placed him among the division's most productive attacking players outside the traditional "big six," playing as an attacking midfielder or inverted winger with, as his profile puts it, a knack for scoring from distance and driving at defences at pace.
The follow-up season did not let up. For much of the saga, Arsenal were reported as favourites. Mikel Arteta's side had been long-term admirers, and a move to north London looked, at various points, close to complete.
